“I do this for the students” “ I just want to make a difference”
“I had the best teacher, I just want to be like them and change lives”.
We enter the classroom and the teaching profession often as “a calling”. Not for personal accolades or impressive financial gain, but rather as a service with passion and a commitment to students and their learning. I know many teachers, myself included, jokingly refer to “summers off” as a catalyst for their decision, but we have all felt the drive to empower students and help them acquire and develop skills to meet new challenges. It is these successes that have us returning to the classroom after those “summers off” with passion and tenacity, class lists in hand.
Despite the calling that many educators feel, our colleagues are leaving the profession at alarmingly new heights. Isolation, burn out, and fatigue are often cited as reasons for a career shift. To protect ourselves and counter this trend, it is crucial that we cultivate spaces where educators feel seen and supported as they reconnect to their purpose. Butte County Office of Education invites all those in education to join us as we reflect on our craft and redirect our focus to the power of teachers; building a committed network of educators eager to collaborate and support one another in new learning as we navigate the new educational landscape.
Butte County Office of Education’s Professional Learning Department is offering a new 2 unit course, Beyond the Checklist- the New 2024 CSTPs. Using the 2024 California Standards for the Teaching Profession, this course will consider the evolving role of the teacher in the classroom, and discuss innovative and productive ways to maximize student achievement and job satisfaction as aligned with each CSTP. We invite all educators to join us in this collaborative and supportive setting for bimonthly zooms to consider the updates to the 2009 CSTPs and how they can serve as a catalyst to build more empathetic and authentic classrooms that serve both students AND teachers.
This 2 unit course has been created with the educator schedule in mind, providing flexibility and choice to maximize both relevance and impact.
